Summary
The requester asked for an accurate map of the West Baldwin Reservoir catchment area, noting that the online MANNGIS map incorrectly omitted water pumped from East Baldwin. The Manx Utilities Authority responded by explaining the distinction between direct and indirect catchments and provided a map of the East Baldwin Valley as an indirect catchment.
Key Facts
- MANNGIS maps only display direct catchments that naturally drain into reservoirs due to topography.
- East Baldwin Valley is classified as an indirect catchment because water is pumped via a water main.
- The authority provided a plan representing the East Baldwin Valley catchment that feeds West Baldwin reservoir.
- The request was received on 17 December 2025 and closed on 13 January 2026.
- The response included an attached document titled 'West Baldwin Reservoir – Indirect Catchment'.

Dear ###
We write further to your request, received 17 December 2025, which states:
"Please can you provide an accurate map of the West Baldwin Reservoir catchment area as the one shown online on the MANNGIS Island Environment map is incorrect, by missing off the water from East Baldwin that is pumped up over the hill into the reservoir. Thank you."
Our response to your request is as follows:
The reservoir watershed maps shown on MANNGIS represent only the direct catchments of Manx Utilities impounding reservoirs (IR), i.e. catchments that naturally, due to their topographical features, drain into the reservoirs. East Baldwin Valley is an indirect catchment. Surface water from the catchment can supplement West Baldwin reservoir only via means of a water main connecting the catchment and the reservoir. For this reason, the East Baldwin Valley has not been shown on the MANNGIS maps as a watershed for West Baldwin reservoir.
The plan below represents the catchment watershed in East Baldwin Valley which when required feeds the West Baldwin reservoir:
A larger version of the plan is attached (West Baldwin Reservoir – Indirect Catchment).
