Summary

The requester asked for detailed electricity usage data broken down by dwelling type, bedrooms, and occupants for the last 10 years and monthly data for 2019-2021. The Manx Utilities Authority disclosed that they do not hold the specific demographic breakdowns requested but provided aggregate annual and quarterly electricity demand figures in millions of kWh by tariff type.

Key Facts

  • Manx Utilities does not collect or hold data on dwelling type, number of bedrooms, or number of occupants as part of customer accounts.
  • The authority provided aggregate annual electricity demand figures for 9 years (2013-2021) broken down by Domestic, Non-Domestic, Demand, and Public Lighting.
  • Monthly data for 2019-2021 was not provided because most domestic meters are read on a quarterly basis.
  • Quarterly raw data extracts for 2019, 2020, and 2021 were supplied instead of the requested monthly breakdown.
  • The 2021 Isle of Man Census report was recommended as an alternative source for household statistics.

Data Tables (5)

The annual report and financial statements are produced yearly ending 31 March.
Those for the year-end 2022, are currently being finalised and agreed, and will be
publicly available when laid before Tynwald; this will occur in the coming months.
For year-end: 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021
Domestic 166 160 157 152 149 161 158 155 162
Non Domestic 76 72 70 69 70 65 66 67 58
Demand 134 137 137 141 139 133 135 141 128
Public lighting 5 4 4 5 4 4 3 3 3
Total 381 373 368 367 362 363 362 366 354
• Domestic = for those meters on various domestic tariffs - includes prepay and credit meters;
• Non domestic = for those meters on various business or commercial tariffs;
• Demand = these are industrial and high demand users;
• Public lighting = as described - usage by public and street lighting.
Regarding the second part of your request for monthly breakdown of these figures for
the period January 2019 – December 2020; Manx Utilities do not hold this readily
accessible demand data, on monthly basis. Such detail would have to be derived and
collated as the majority of domestic meters are only read on quarterly basis (an
average of 1/3 each month).
To provide further help and assistance, and provide information that we do hold, we
are able to provide extracts from our quarterly reports that record raw data of demand
usage per quarter. They include estimated data, without network adjustments, yet are
the best figures currently for all island demand at given time. The figures are not
necessarily reflective of demand in that period due to the readings taken on a rolling
usage basis. These show in kWh usage, the figures are in millions:
2019 2020 2021
Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4
Domestic 42.5 38.7 34.3 31.4 46.7 41.9 30.3 42.7 42.9 39.0 38.0 37.2
Non Domestic 16.3 17.0 15.4 16.0 16.4 15.4 12.2 15.2 15.4 14.3 14.7 15.0
Demand 34.2 34.1 32.8 34.6 34.7 30.2 30.9 32.9 33.2 30.6 31.4 33.8
Public lighting 0.9 0.8 0.7 0.7 0.8 0.8 0.6 0.6 0.8 0.1 1.3 0.6
Total 93.9 90.6 83.2 82.7 98.6 88.3 74.0 91.4 91.4 84.0 85.4 86.6
** Caveat: each quarterly demand figure reflects meters read or bills estimated during that 3
month period. For example, Q1 2019 demand reflects usage in a 6 month period, depending
on when the meter was read or estimated, it covers a rolling period between Oct/Nov/Dec 2018
(if read early Jan 2019) through to Jan/Feb/Mar 2019 (if read end of March 2019).
The roll out of smart meters will enable Manx Utilities to have access to more timely
data in the future and allow an improved, accurate and reflective understanding of
electric demand and network performance; please see Smarter Living on our website
for more information on the smart meter programme.

While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance the public authority does not hold or cannot, after taking reasonable steps to do so, find some of the information that you have requested. This is because we do not, as standard, hold or collect detailed information on a dwelling type, number of bedrooms, or the number of occupants, as part of our electric customer account. To supply some advice and assistance that may assist with these specific figures and relating to household statistics, can be found in the 2021 Isle of Man Census report; released by the Cabinet Office: https://www.gov.im/media/1376421/2021-isle-of-man- census-report-part-ii_11052022.pdf (from page 19) Regarding the first part of your request, Manx Utilities do publish the annual demand in kWh usage (in millions), the figure is included in our annual report and financial statements. The reports availed since the formation of Manx Utilities in 2014 following the merger of the Isle of Man Water and Sewerage Authority and the Manx Electricity Authority, are available on our website: https://www.manxutilities.im/.
