How many of these defects resulted in programmed work following an inspection ? How many road openings have been authorised in this area since 1st Jan 2012 ? What inspections are undertaken to ensure that block paving is reinstated to the the appropriate standards following the completion of a road opening by a statutory undertaker ? This question specifically relates to the paved areas that form the Castletown Pedestrian zone. If you are unable to distinguish this area then responses in respect of the entirety of Malew and Arbory Streets would be acceptable.

We write further to your request which was received on 7 January 2019 and which states:

"Please confirm the following: 1. How many highway defects have been reported in Malew And Arbory Street since 1st Jan 2012 ? 2. What inspections are undertaken to ensure that block paving is reinstated to the the appropriate standards following the completion of a road opening by a statutory undertaker ? This question specifically relates to the paved areas that form the Castletown Pedestrian zone. If you are unable to distinguish this area then responses in respect of the entirety of Malew and Arbory Streets would be acceptable."

We are pleased to supply the answers to your questions, which we have numbered for ease of reference. 1. 41 defects were reported. 2. 39 defects were resolved and 2 were made safe before being added to the Planned Work Programme (paved areas outside Shoprite and in Malew Street). 3. 27 road openings have been authorised. 4. Inspections of any work carried out on the highway take place on notice that the works are completed, and by monthly routine inspection by the Highway Inspectors; this would be the same for the paved areas you refer to. Any failings would be addressed by calling the contractor back to correct the defects.
