Dear ###

We write further to your request which was received on 28 December 2018 and which states:

"is there a standardised formal policy on female menopause and male menopause, are there any gaps or any variances in each part of the public sector and are they compatible with the Equality Act?"

While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance the public authority does not hold the information that you have requested. There is currently no formal policy held by the Office of Human Resources, Isle of Man Government, specifically in relation to the female and male menopause. To provide you with advice and assistance, we can advise that if an employee is absent due to the symptoms of the menopause, the Management of Sickness Absence Policy applies. This policy is available on the Isle of Man Government website at https://hr.gov.im/sickness-and-absence/ .
With reference to the Equality Act 2017, the menopause is not defined as a disability under this Act, however, the symptoms of the menopause may meet the definition of disability and each case will be unique. The disability provisions of the Equality Act 2017 come into force on 1 January 2020.
