Summary

A request was made for statistics on motorcyclist fatalities on Manx roads since 2008, but the Isle of Man Constabulary could only provide data from 2012 due to system changes. The response disclosed 26 fatalities over the period, including a breakdown by location and country of residence.

Key Facts

  • Data prior to 2012 was unavailable because a different recording system was used that lacked details on vehicle types and rider residence.
  • The statistics cover fatal collisions on open roads only, excluding incidents on closed roads during races.
  • 23 of the 25 identified incidents occurred during May, June, and August, coinciding with major motoring events.
  • The majority of fatalities (14) involved riders from England, followed by 8 from the Isle of Man.
  • One fatality was a pillion passenger, and one incident resulted in the deaths of two riders.

Dear ###

We write further to your request which was received on 27 July 2018 and which states:

"Good afternoon, I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request the following information from the Isle of Man Constabulary: The number of motorcyclists killed on Manx roads over last 7 years. The number of motorcyclists killed on the A18 Mountain Road over same time frame. A breakdown of where the bikers were from? (UK, IOM etc) If you can identify any ways that my request could be refined please provide further advice and assistance to indicate this. If you have any queries please don't hesitate to contact me and I will be happy to clarify what I am asking for. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response."

Our response to your request is as follows:
The source of this data was fatal collisions recorded by the Police on open roads (i.e. not including those on closed roads i.e. during races) since start of 2012 (the last 6

years and seven months), which is as far back as it was possible to retrieve data sufficient to answer the specific questions.  Prior to 2012 the detailed RTC records were not available to review, as a different system was used to record them, and detail on vehicle types involved and rider residence was not accessible.  Collision address was used to determine whether incident was relevant to be counted as occurring on the Mountain Road, the A18.  Vehicle types involved in collisions allowed filtering to those involving motorcycles.  Biker residence required individual assessment of RTC records.  It should be noted that one incident involved death of a pillion passenger, rather than the rider, and one incident resulted in deaths of two riders.  Those not on the A18 are shown as “Other” meaning other locations. Results: The number of motorcyclists killed on Manx roads over last 7 calendar years. 25 relevant Road Traffic Collisions were identified, resulting in deaths of 26 motorcyclists (including one pillion passenger) 23 of the incidents occurring during the months of May, June and August when there are more motorcyclists on Islands roads for the Tourist Trophy and Festival of Motoring. RTC location 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 (Jan-Jul) Mountain Road 1 1 0 5 1 0 2 Other 6 1 3 1 2 1 2 Total 7 2 3 6 3 1 4 A breakdown of where the bikers were from (UK, IOM etc.) Country of Residence Fatalities England 14 France 1 Germany 2 Isle of Man 8 Scotland 1 Total 26 The Constabulary continues to work to reduce Road Traffic casualties and fatalities in partnership with other agencies. The Road Safety Strategy is being prepared and in depth analysis of RTC casualties, including Motorcycle casualties.
