I think that is the fair and correct assumption currently as a typical month work on the chassis with the manpower I have available to me. At the moment I imagine the boiler will be completed long before the chassis so some timing will need to be considered on both elements. Note your request, if you can bear with me as I'm just dealing with another couple of jobs I'm currently pricing and costing. As Sections E and F are for replacement Smokebox and Ashpan I take it the tank riveting and other items are covered under the day rate principle? Mike, Is it possible for a purchase order to cover the items completed as per notes on Section A and parts of Section B. This for 12 1/2 days labour, which at the 2024 rate is for + vat. I can then raise a sales invoice for this which will keep the finance team happy, and keep the mechanical stage of the project up to date. Notes of Discussions at SVR 8th July 2025
Updated 24/10/25
Present:
-
Frames Adjustment and Repairs ALL COMPLEDED EXCEPT ITEM 8
-
Fit rear axle hornguides.
-
Set frames level in longitudinal and transverse directions at all points forward of the rear axle using laser and spirit levels.
-
It will be observed that the rear of the LH frame plate is approximately 5/16” higher than the RH frame plate and that both plates lean top towards the right when viewed from the rear.
-
Make a vertical cut in LH frame plate directly above the rear axle, from the top of the plate down to the washout plug access hole.
-
Manipulate the frames such that the top of the LH frame plate is the same height as the RH frame plate. Check that the rear axle hornguides are approximately vertical (small errors can be corrected by machining later).
-
Apply further correction to the frames to allow for shrinkage in the weld, fit rear hornstays or similar to restrict movement and weld the full length of the cut, in stages and with further correction as required.
-
Check the frames for transverse level at all points and particularly at the rear tank support brackets.
-
Complete remaining work in Sections B to F of document dated 24/06/24
-
Regulator
to ask whether SVR could overhaul of the regulator and if so at what cost.
- J Pipe
It is agreed that a new casting is required. Initial investigation suggests that the existing pattern should be suitable. has retrieved the patterns from IoM Pattern Store and will arrange for modification if required and then arrange for a casting to be made and machined.
- Blower Valve
Only the mounting flange exists so the boiler will need to be blanked for the hydraulic test. ( will arrange for a replacement valve before the loco enters service). Section 25 Section 25 Section 25 Section 2 Section 25 5. Cladding Brackets
Two new brackets IMR 01067 have been given to
- Water Gauge Lamp Brackets
A batch of new brackets are overdue from the foundry. will check on delivery date. As the brackets are vulnerable to being bent when handling the boiler, they will not be fitted until the boiler is in the frames, the holes being temporarily plugged for the hydraulic test as required.
- Hydraulic Test
The boiler will be hydraulically tested following completion of the work by SVR reasonably imminently. But as the locomotive is unlikely to re-enter service just yet a further hydraulic test is likely at a future date. The initial hydraulic test will therefore be witnessed by to save cost and the final one by BES, possibly at Douglas.
- Steam Test
If the boiler is steamed at SVR it will be necessary to subsequently remove the dome and add preservative to the regulator components prior to being stored. It will then have to be opened up again to clean the preservative off before being used. Hence it would be better to delay the initial steam test until the loco is nearer to being ready, or for it to perhaps be done at Douglas. to discuss this with IMR.
- Smokebox Door
Appears to be in usable condition.
- Cladding
SVR to renovate, or where necessary renew, the boiler cladding and crinoline rings with reference to Beyer Peacock drawings 99511, 99531 and 99533. The backhead and smokebox bezels, safety valve bonnet and steam turret bonnet are all at Douglas and will be fitted when the loco returns there.
- Safety Valve Branch
to examine the safety valve branch when next at SVR to determine whether serviceable and whether the safety valve mountings have the latest stud layout.
- Hornguides
to discuss with the possibility of SVR being able to fit and machine the hornguides.

-
Thread the two ½” dia oil holes in the Pony Truck Bearer Plate 3/8 BSP for a depth of ½” from the top face.
-
Machine Pont Truck Bearer Plate and fit bush as shown on drawing IMR 02011.
-
Rivet coupling housing to the buffer plate
-
Rivet the transverse length of angle iron to the Frame Stiffener Plate (ie the horizontal plate below the cylinders)
-
Rivet Frame Stiffener Plate to the frames. Note: sides to be hot riveted not cold riveted as shown on drawing 99298. Refer also to the same drawing for details of which holes take bolts not rivets and which rivet holes are countersunk.
-
Rivet Pony Truck Anchor and Bearer plates to frames. Note: all to be hot riveted not cold riveted as shown on drawing 99298. Note also that the anchor plate should have the two ½” studs at the rear.
-
Remaining components are to be left bolted until the new cylinders are available, ie two pieces of 1.25” x 1.5” steel bar which support the front cylinder plates, the pair of front cylinder plates and the frame stretcher immediately to the rear of the cylinder.
-
Paint all bare metal with primer.
Section C, Frame Repairs, Rear
-
Rivet the two new frame stiffener angle irons, one each side, below the expansion bracket supports, 8 rivets each, hot riveted
-
Establish the reason for the rear RH tank support not being horizontal and make the necessary corrections.
-
Enlarge 4 sets of spring hanger holes to 1 ¼” dia and fit free issue tension bushes
Section D, Water Tanks
- Subject to satisfactory survey, rivet the water tank components together as shown on drawing 99326
Section E, Smokebox
-
Make a new smokebox with reference to the original item and drawing 99302. (ie front plate set on the wrapper and all rivets countersunk outside) Leave sides and front over length initially.
-
Fit boiler to frames
-
Fit smokebox to boiler, trimming sides and front as required
Note: Omit holes for vacuum ejector exhaust pipe and chimney until vacuum pipe and blastpipe are available.
Section F, Ashpan
- Make and fit a new ashpan. This to be a welded stainless steel version of the original design with external dimensions as shown on drawings 99303 and 99509. However the access door in the floor is to be rectangular and similar to drawing IMR 01057, and the front and rear damper doors are to be similar in construction to IMR 01055 and IMR
- An internal water sprinkler system with a hose connection is to be included. More information about the above details will be provided later.

However Mannin has now been stripped of asbestos and within weeks I am hoping to
have the boiler lifted from the frames. This boiler is the original 1925, copper firebox
design (B05-1925). I need to have the boiler placed in a suitable environment to allow
inspection and assessment, there is a desire to save as much of the original boiler as is
practical.
has been contracted to create the necessary new or repaired
boiler design as we conclude is appropriate, based of course on the existing heavy
repair of Loch’s boiler (1922, our ref. B08-1922) and the new build boilers. As such
the new/repaired boiler is likely to be the fifth of the boilers constructed.
Could you make a proposal for the receipt, inspection and storage of the boiler to
allow it to be assessed and costed as needed.

We have an specific contract for the new boilers as that was seen to be something
over and above the routine boilers inspections. The routine inspections are covered by
British Engineering Services policy TNN393817. We have told BES that the 5th boiler
will be different to that original envisaged.
For the inspection of Mannin’s existing boiler or parts thereof this should be covered by
TNN393817.
