Summary

The requester asked for a 20-year breakdown of Parsonage-Turner syndrome and brachial neuritis diagnoses by age and gender, which Manx Care provided in full along with a caution regarding coding inconsistencies.

Key Facts

  • Manx Care confirmed that Parsonage-Turner syndrome, brachial neuritis, and neuralgic amyotrophy are often used interchangeably but may be coded inconsistently by GPs.
  • The data covers diagnoses from 2005 to 2024, split by gender and age groups.
  • More than half of the individuals diagnosed in the dataset are no longer registered on the Isle of Man due to death or relocation.
  • The response included a total of 102 recorded cases across all related conditions over the 20-year period.
  • The authority noted that 'Brachial (Cervical) Neuritis' codes might erroneously include cases of cervical disc issues or direct trauma.

The table above shows the age/sex of people diagnosed with each of the conditions included over the last 20 years. It is to be noted more than half are no longer registered on the Isle of Man, meaning they have either died or moved away.

Parsonage – Turner syndrome is one of several names for the same thing. There are potentially issues with the coding. Coding in Primary Care is added by GPs not by clinical coders. This can mean that codes are used incorrectly and inconsistently – in this example brachial (cervical) neuritis may be synonymous with Parsonage Turner syndrome but could be being used erroneously when the underlying problem is cervical disc or direct trauma. So that code, in particular, is probably a mixture of things.
