  1. INTRODUCTION

Purpose
To explain what the air ambulance service provides for it’s staff and what is expected of the staff in terms of clothing an personal possessions.

  1. PROCEDURE

Uniform

All substantive staff are issued with:  Blue tunic top with logo and staff member’s name  Dark blue utility trousers  Dark blue lined utility trousers for winter  Waterproof, high visibility coat with logo and staff member’s name  Dark Blue fleece jacket (optional)

The uniform is the same for both transfer practitioners and doctors.

Staff who have not been issued with a uniform should wear their normal healthcare worker uniform, e.g. Noble’s Hospital nurses uniform or IOM ambulance service uniform. Staff who work for contracted companies i.e. the aviation company, wear the uniform issued by that company.

A high visibility jacket must be worn at the airport and on the helipad. For staff who do not have their own, there are shared high-vis waterproof coats in the air ambulance equipment room. There are also high visibility tabards for use in warm weather.

All staff must wear closed toe, flat soled shoes with good grip, such as walking boots or trainers. Imagine yourself doing CPR in a moving ambulance, then decide if your footwear has suitable grip.

Staff should wear their uniform whenever possible, both to identify their role, and offer them protection. It’s understood that at times, getting the correct uniform is either not possible (e.g. in the wash) or getting correct uniform would delay an urgent transfer. Staff will not be punished for uniform misdemeanours.

Staff who need glasses to read small print on drug labels should carry them on their person where they can be easily reached in an emergency. Front jacket pockets, bum bags or neck chords are ideal.

Personal property Staff should take the following items on all transfers.
 Own mobile phone with charger cable  Debit Card  Photo ID Suitable photo ID is a government issued card (see lead coordinator to arrange if you need one), driver’s license or passport.

Carry the photo ID on your person at all times – don’t leave it in a bag, as it may be checked re-entering the hangar, even if you just left the hangar.

It is never guaranteed that a staff member will make it home the same day as they departed. It is advisable to have a bag that contains the following items  Toothbrush and paste, deodorant etc  Clean underwear  Food

If these items haven’t been taken, and the member of staff finds themselves out overnight or for a prolonged period in the UK, the ambulance crew will stop, after dropping off the patient, at a garage or other en-route location so they can buy them.

It is best to avoid taking items that won’t be accepted as hand luggage on a commercial flight, such as bottles of shampoo over 100ml. If you return commercial, the item will have to be discarded.

Hospital property  In addition to your own mobile, always take hospital mobile to be picked up from Switch board, as some personal phones have problems connecting whilst in the UK.  Take the air ambulance ipad from the office
o It is for your work-related study and for obtaining feedback from patients.
o Especially remember to take the ipad when going on a long “treat and return transfer” so you can utilise your paid time whilst waiting the UK to read standard operating procedures and do online training.
