Dear ###

We write further to your request, received 25 February 2025, which states:

"In respect of the recent ambulance driving training courses and assessments provided for Manx Care by a UK based firm employing UK resident driving instructors, how many of those UK resident Instructors were on the Isle of Man's register as Approved Driving Instructors (ADI's).

Is the Department of Infrastructure informed when applications are submitted for Work Permits for individuals who are to work as Driving Instructors?

Is so, in respect of the last 12 months, on how many occasions was the Department of Infrastructure informed of such applications and what was the Department's response?

In the last 12 months, how many Driving Instructors who required Work Permits were registered as IOM ADI's?"

Our response to your request is as follows: I have detailed below the information that is being released to you.

All Approved Driving Instructors (ADI) must be registered with the Department and have passed all of the qualifying examinations before they can teach anyone for money or 'money's worth' for motorcars and CBT Training for motorcycles.

The Department is not informed when applications are submitted for Work Permits for individuals who are to work as Driving Instructors. As part of the process to become an ADI they would need to apply to the Department to be on the register and if relocating from the UK would be informed that a Work Permit is required as well as an IOM address and driving licence.

UK ADI’s can exchange their ADI badge if it is still in date and do not need to pass the qualifying exams as they will have already done that in the UK but they must produce their Work Permit with their application to be on the register.
