We write further to your request, received 11 November 2024, which states:

I request information on the use of CCTV on Emergency Ambulances. Please confirm whether these are constantly recording or whether they are activated by Paramedics/Technicians. If footage is recorded how long is it retained for? Does Manx Care have a policy regarding CCTV on ambulances?

Our response to your request is as follows: I have detailed below the information that is being released to you.

Please confirm whether these are constantly recording or whether they are activated by Paramedics/Technicians.

The external/outward facing cameras start recording when the vehicle ignition is activated. They stop recording approximately 30 minutes after the ignition is switched off. The camera in the rear saloon of Ambulances only capture video and audio when the panic alarm is activated.

If footage is recorded how long is it retained for?

The retention of recorded material is dependent on the capacity of the equipment in each vehicle. The maximum amount of time that footage is retained for is up to 320 hours of recorded material.

An exception to this is where recorded material is required to be kept for a longer period such as an investigation or complaint. In these circumstances the specific recorded materials required would be held separately until the completion of the investigation or complaint.

Does Manx Care have a policy regarding CCTV on ambulances?

The Isle of Man Ambulance Service which is a department within Manx Care have a policy on the use of CCTV within Ambulance Vehicles.
