Dear ###
We write further to your request, received 27 August 2024, which states:
“Please could you provide figures for 2023/24 for suicide verdicts and
misadventure verdicts in separate columns please for each year and verdict.
With Regards"
The information you have requested is provided in the table below which shows the number of registered deaths with underlying cause of suicide or misadventure for 2023 and reported data for 2024 (till week ending 24 August 2024).
Year Suicides Misadventures 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2023 14 5 Reports received 1 January 2024 to week ending 24 August 2024 7 4
When considering deaths with an underlying cause of suicide, it should be noted that deaths registered within this time period is different from the deaths occurring in this period. The time taken from death until inquest verdict and registration of death can be significant, therefore this total will include deaths that occurred prior to 2023 and 2024, and will exclude some that have occurred but are yet to have an inquest.
