FOI REFERENCE NO: IM823591 REQUEST UNDER THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2015 (“the Act”) Thank you for your request dated 13th March 2017
Your request You asked for; The Department to confirm if we ‘have (or have the intention to create), any policies and procedures relating to the placement, “management”, health and welfare of transsexual, transgender or gender-fluid (non-binary) prisoners’. Response to your request
The answer to your question is that there is not a policy or procedure, nor is there an intention to create a policy or procedure. Each case is unique and an individual care plan will be written for any offender depending on what stage of their transition and their individual needs.
Within the UK an offender is either managed as a man or a woman as each prisoner is designated by gender. The advantage the IOM Prison has is that it manages both female and male offenders and that the transition and location can be managed on the one site.
