RE: REQUEST UNDER THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2015 ("the Act") Reference Number - IM77896I Thank you for your Freedom of Information request received by the Department of Education and Children on 13th February 2017. You asked: For each individual Island secondary school (including/ if possible/ King Williams CollegeJ please provide the following data, if possible, for the academic years 2011/12;2012/13;2013/14;2014/15; and 2015/16.· • The number of pupils on the school roll; • The gender breakdown (percentage) of the number of pupils on the school roll; • The number of authorised pupil absences (days/half-days) in each academic year; • The number of unauthorised pupil absences (days/half-days) in each academic year; • The percentage of pupils on the school roll entitled to free school meals; • The percentage of pupils on the school roll determined as having Special Educational Needs {SEN); • The percentage of school pupils whose first language is not/believed not to be English; • The percentage of pupils from each ethnic background present in the school; • The GCSE results for that year; • The A Level results for that year; • The number of extra curricular clubs available to each year group. Department Response The Department is pleased to provide you with some of the information detailed in your Freedom of Information request but please note that other information is subject to practical refusal reasons or absolute exemptions as follows:- • Details of the number of pupils on the secondary school roll is attached and includes a breakdown of pupil gender. • Details of the number of authorised secondary school pupil absences (days/half-days) in each academic year is attached. • Details of the number of unauthorised secondary school pupil absences (days/half-days) in each academic year is attached. *Please note that the figures recorded for authorised/unauthorised absences at Ballakermeen High School during 2011/2012 are estimated figures due to an administrative error made during the input of figures for the month of January and March 2011. • Details of the percentage of secondary school pupils on the school roll entitled to free school meals in each academic year is attached. • Details of the percentage of secondary school pupils on the school roll determined as having Special Educational Needs (SEN) is attached. • Details of the percentage of school pupils whose first language is not/believed not to be English is information attached. • Ethnic background data - In respect of the request for information of the percentage of pupils from each ethnic background present in the school, please note that the Department does not require ethnicity to be recorded as a standard requirement. However, Ballakermeen High School has some limited data which is attached. • In respect of similar ethnicity information from other schools your request is refused pursuant to the provisions of section 8(3) of the Freedom of Information Act and for practical refusal reasons under sections 11(3)(a) and 11(3)(b) of Act as:- o the Department does not hold or cannot, after taking reasonable steps to do so, find the information - [S11(3)(a)J, and o complying with the request for information would require the Department to do one or more of the matters mentioned in section 8(3) (things a public authority is not required to do by the Act) [s11(3)(b)J o practical refusal reasons apply under s8(3)(a), (b) and (c) of the Act:- • s8(3)(a) - the Department is not required to create or derive information from information that it holds • s8(3)(b) - complying with the request would require the Department to undertake research into, or analysis of, information that it holds, • s8(3)( c) - complying with the request would require the Department to undertake substantial compilation or collation of information that it holds. • The GCSE results for the requested years - the request for this information is refused as an absolute exemption exists in respect of this data under section 20 of the Act (information accessible to applicant by other means).
