The Department of Education, Sport and Culture provided a comprehensive dataset on Isle of Man primary schools covering pupil rolls, demographics, attendance, and teacher-assessed scores for academic years 2012-16. The response confirmed that all requested information was sent, with a note that gender breakdown was included within the roll data and that average point scores would not be available for future years due to software changes.
Key Facts
The request covered all individual Island primary schools for academic years 2012-13 through 2015-16.
Data provided includes pupil roll numbers, gender breakdown, authorized and unauthorized absences, free school meal percentages, SEN percentages, and first language statistics.
Teacher-assessed average point scores for KS1 and KS2 in literacy, mathematics, and science were converted from level data to satisfy the request.
Absence data is recorded by sessions (morning or afternoon) rather than days or half-days.
Future average point scores will not be available due to changes in the Department's data collection software.

RE: REQUEST UNDER THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2015 ("the Act'')
Reference Number - IM72257I
Thank you, for your Freedom of Information request received by the Department of Education
and Children on 3rd January 2017.
You asked:
For each individual Island primary (both provided and maintained) school please provide the
following data for the academic years 2012-13; 2013-14; 2014-15; and 2015-16:-
•
The number of pupils on the school roll;
•
The gender breakdown (percentage) of the number of pupils on the school roll;
•
The number of authorised pupil absences (days/half-days) in each academic year;
•
The number of unauthorised pupil absences (days/half-days) in each academic year;
•
The percentage of pupils on the school roll entitled to free school meals;
•
The percentage of pupils on the school roll determined as having Special Educational Needs
(SEN);
•
The percentage of school pupils whose first language is not/believed not to be English;
•
The teacher assessed average point score for the cohort completing KS1 in each of the
following subjects: literacy (broken down by speaking & listening, reading and writing),
maMemaffcsand sdence;
•
The teacher assessed average point score for the cohort completing KS2 in each of the
following subjects: literacy (broken down by speaking and listening, reading and writing),
mathematics and sdence.
Department Response
We are pleased to be able to provide you with the following documentation as requested for the
academic years 2012-13; 2013-14; 2014-15; and 2015-16:-
•
The number of pupils on the school roll
•
The gender breakdown (percentage) of the number of pupils on the school roll
•
The number of authorised pupil absences (days/half-days) in each academic year
•
The number of unauthorised pupil absences (days/half-days) in each academic year
•
The percentage of pupils on the school roll entitled to free school meals
•
The percentage of pupils on the school roll determined as having Special Educational Needs
(SEN)
•
The percentage of school pupils whose first language is not/believed not to be English
As you will see from the information I have attached, your request for the number of pupils on
roll at each of the primary schools for the academic years 2012-13; 2013-14; 2014-15; and
2015-16, also contains the numbers of pupil gender and therefore, I hope this will satisfy the
need to provide you with a separate answer to Point 2 of your request.
With regards to Points 3 and 4 of your request for pupil authorised absences and unauthorised
absences, (days/half days), this information is recorded by the number of sessions attended by
each primary school pupil. A session covers either a morning or afternoon so a day covers two
sessions per pupil.
In relation to your last two requests:-
•
The teacher assessed average point score for the cohort completing KS1 in each of the
following subjects: literacy (broken down by speaking & listening, reading and writing),
mathemaucsand sdence;
•
The teacher assessed average point score for the cohort completing KS2 in each of the
following subjects: literacy (broken down by speaking and listening, reading and writing),
mathematics and science
I wrote to you on 6th January 2017, seeking further clarification of these questions, and
having received your response on 9th January 2017, in answer to this request, the
Department is able to provide you with information of Teacher Average Point's Scores
points 8 and 9, for KS1 and KS2, covering years 2012 to 2016. In order to produce the data
attached, even though not all primary schools record average point scores, the Data
Administrator has taken the level data and converted it which hopefully assists you with
your request. Please be aware that due to changes in the software used by the Department
to collect data, average points scores will no longer be available for subsequent years.
This attached information will also be published on the Government website in due course and
will be accessible via: https://www.gov.im/about-the-government/departments/education-and
children/information-and-publications should you wish to revisit the information.
Review Process
If you are unhappy with this response to your Freedom of Information request, you may ask us
to carry out an internal review of the response, by completing a Review/Complaint form and
submitting it electronically or by delivery/post to: Mr Andrew Shipley, Legal and Administration
Manager, Hamilton House, Peel Road, Douglas, Isle of Man, IM1 5EZ.
