Dear XXXX,

We write further to your request which was received on 18 May 2022 and which states:

"Please can you confirm the number of speeding convictions that have been appealed on the Island over the last five years, broken down by year. Can you also confirm how many of those appeals have been due to incorrect signage"

Our response to your request is as follows:

According to Attorney General’s Chambers’ records there have been no appeals lodged in relation to speeding convictions in the last 5 years.

By way of advice and assistance I thought it useful to provide further information regarding appeals below;

Once an individual is convicted through the Courts in relation to speeding offences they have the right to appeal that decision, and at that point it is transferred to the Staff of Government (Appeal Division) for further processing.

Alternatively Endorsed Fixed Penalty Notices (EFPN) are sometimes issued from the outset – EFPNs are not formally ‘appealed’ as such, but if the individual does not wish to accept an EFPN they can elect to receive a summons for a future court appearance.
