Happy enough with the proposal to close. However, it does pose some difficulties for wheelchair users who
need an approximately horizontal place to get into and out of vehicles.
Could you ensure that parking on the roadway around the toll gates is reserved for disabled parking?
Equally allowing access to the Port Soderick Upper car park would help at the southern end. Parking on the
roadway on slopes is not really the solution for us.
Equally preventing parking near to the currently closed section will stop those with limited mobility from
accessing a significant length of the drive.

Make it a protected Nature Reserve.
Remove all the tarmac and just have a raad yin follin style track.
Put VERY CLEAR SIGNS UP EVERYWHERE about protecting nature and legal consequences for those
that don't.
Rabbits are constantly run over on marine drive. As an animal lover it's very upsetting to see so many little
corpses.

I fully support this long awaited scheme which will give walkers, joggers and the like back a lovely walking
circuit with no fear of vehicles to endanger people and children. There will also be less dog fouling causef
by dog owners who let dogs out without getting out if their cars and hence leaving the dog faeces behind!
The quicker this is enforced the better.

What an excellent idea.
The current pavement is not fit for purpose and as you've identified there is currently a danger to cyclists
and pedestrians from motor vehicles both directly and indirectly (emissions).
I would recommend that the gates are modified such that cyclists can pass through without having to
dismount.
Kind Regards,

Plans for marine drive going pedestrian only would be a great idea if you provided more places for
campervans and motorhomes. We are in a situation for some years to come with covid where staycations are
what will keep the manx tourism sector afloat. Instead of focusing solely on pedestrians you need to cater
for others as well. Sales of campers have rocketed on the island. This will lead to a severe lack of space for
the amount of people with rv,s and all you seem to be doing is cutting more places. You need to find a
balance before you fully shoot yourselves in the foot. Until this balance is reached I have to oppose your
pedestrianisation. I know there is a whole community of rv owners (which is increaing weekly) that feel the
same way!

Totally against this idea, this is the one area that offers off leash for dog owners. I use the Port Soderick end
of Marine Drive 3 times a day as it's an enclosed area. There is nothing wrong as it is please leave alone it
works as it is now.

Closure of Marine Drive to cars, would mean that many people with walking problems would be unable to
use Marine Drive for the simple pleasure of admiring the views from their vehicles or taking a small walk.
As we have an elderly population, closure to cars seems rather selfish and unacceptable.

While I don't feel it is feasible to repair and reopen the whole of Marine Drive, and yes I can remember the
entire length being open, it seems drastic to close the northern stretch to all vehicles.
As an active person I am very aware of the benefits of exercise to mental health but equally for those unable
to exercise the opportunity to sit and look at the view, watch wildlife and interact with others can be equally
beneficial. Closing the road to vehicles would surely have an impact for many people unable to walk to get
there either due to age or disability
The area brings enjoyment to those who have difficulty walking. They can enjoy the views or take a short
walk on the level if they are driven there by family or friends.
Kind regards

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am emailing in regards to the proposals put forward by the Department for the use of Marine Drive as a
pedestrianised leisure route.
As a frequent user of Marine Drive for walking, (weekly ‐ moreso within lockdowns) I find the
Department's proposal to be one dimensional; and if I may so, potentially illegal. Walkers, runners, dog
walkers and cyclists of all ages and abilities are able to use the full length of Marine Drive already without
any hindrance from vehicular traffic. The already closed off central section is free of vehicles already and is
enjoyed by those able to travel to it.
To close off Marine Drive at the Arches and pedestrianise it until the next junction with the road to Port
Soderick Glen would prevent too many people with mobility issues from being able to enjoy the area.
Elderly people who like to drive up as far as they can and sit in their cars whilst having lunch and enjoying
the view without having to walk are no problem to those enjoying the area on foot.
Disabled people of all ages much the same ‐ to deliberately pedestrianise such a large area of natural
beauty that is currently enjoyed by so many would be to discriminate against them; and that's where I feel
a legal issue may come in to it. Current leisure routes were previously difficult to access anyway, so that
issue hadn't arisen before.
Needless to say, I am against the Department's proposals to pedestrianise for a cycle/walking leisure
route, and will happily contribute to any proposals that allow access for all.
Kind Regards,

Dear DOI,
* Opposed to closure - see comments below.
* POSSIBLE COMPROMISE - At the very least allow Marine Drive to be accessible to vehicles with Blue
Bade holders.
I am Manx and have grown up with Marine Drive as part of Island life remembering it when still a road to
Port Soderick. I would like to strongly oppose closing Marine Drive to vehicles which will deny even more
of the Islands beauty to people with disabilities. From my perspective as a full time wheelchair user it is rare
to be able to get so close to so much rugged beauty of the Islands coast line, even if only to view from the
inside of a vehicle as I still drive an adapted vehicle. As it is a no through road there is little traffic other
than similar admirers of the scenery whether walking or cycling, a luxury denied to me.
Even with a companion to push the wheelchair the distance along the drive to view scenery would be
severely reduced. I have many friends able-bodied disabled and elderly that have similar reservations about
this plan to close Marine Drive.
At the very least allow the drive to be accessible to Blue Bade holders. Don't make this Island even more
inaccessible!
Kindest of regards,

I don't think I agree with the closure. I walk down but actually if I did it now I'd maybe drive as my dog is
getting really old. I can see why you are suggesting closing it, but I don't think it is being used massively
and the elderly and or disabled would be excluded.

The Isle of
Man Government is committed to the health and wellbeing of the Island’s residents creating an enjoyable place to
live, grow, work and play. To support its desire to encourage people to exercise more and actively travel, the
Department is proposing to permanently close Marine Drive in Douglas to motor vehicles, allowing access only for
pedestrians and cyclists. This will be an addition to the existing network of active travel leisure routes. It will enable
pedestrians and cyclists to exercise along one the Island’s most scenic and picturesque stretches of road, free from
concerns about motorised vehicles.’
In addition to this you add that by disallowing motor vehicles you will be enabling access for all, which of course is
contradiction.
was more about saving money than recreation, and explained the financial issues about opening the road as a
thoroughfare. I understand that and as much as it would be nice to drive along the whole length it is not realistic a
this time.
My wife is disabled and she enjoys being driven to the car park for a picnic and then enjoying a short walk along th
coast. At no time have we ever felt unsafe by the presence of motor vehicles but sometimes more so by the speed
cyclists ride along the road.
who is disabled. Legislation passed during the current Administration makes it UNLAWFUL to discriminate against
the disabled by restricting or preventing their lawful right of access to services and facilities, thus by closing this road
to motor vehicles, you will be doing just that. Accessing Marine Drive by car is her only option to enable her to enjoy
the full benefit of the Isle of Man and it’s environment and facilities, as with pedestrians and cyclists alike.
If you close this road to all motor vehicles you will be breaking the law. It is as simple as that and if you do so, I wil
consider my legal options against you.

Appendix 1 1 From: Sent: 07 March 2021 12:40 To: DOI, Consultations Subject: Marine Drive Caution: This email is from an external sender. Please take care before opening any attachments or  following any links.   My wife and I regularly walk on Marine Drive, especially the southern and middle sections.
Since the closure of the road to through traffic in 1977, it is of no practical use to motorists, and motor vehicles on the northern and southern sections only endanger and discourage walkers and cyclists. The closure of the whole of Marine Drive to motor vehicles would make the road much safer and more pleasant, and greatly improve everyone's enjoyment of it.
I am strongly in favour of the closure.

Please though. Just because it’s closed. Don’t stop maintaining it as rock slip and debris left on the road is hazardous to everyone using it.

Plus is there any chance pavements could be installed between Laxey and Onchan? I’d walk a lot more into laxey and into Onchan if I wasn’t being nearly squashed by hurried traffic on the long stretches without a safe walking place.

Many thanks

I am responding to you asked for opinions regarding the Marine drive proposal to make it a vehicle free area.

I agree with this and think it is a good idea to have a safe area for walkers, cyclists and other users.

I think that the proposed area should be from the pigeon stream car park to the Port Soderick area proposed. This would allow a well defined place for vehicles to park.
A cycle lane from the toll gate to the car park could be put in to keep cyclists safer if that was the case. The fencing and footpath needs repairing to keep walkers safe. In the closed area a separate cycle lane and separate walking lane should be marked. This should help avoid accidents. Currently walkers and cyclists share the same space. Walkers often walk in the central carriage way on the open road part of the Marine drive as I have often witnessed.

The more areas that cyclists and walkers can go the better in my opinion.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely.

Good morning I'd like to express my view on Marine Drive please. I would like it closed to vehicles asap as most of the traffic using this road are only driving up to get to the closed to vehicles section so they can exercise , walk their dog etc. The others are or boy racers using it as a race track. I've lived in Douglas for 30 years and feel this would benefit residents immensely having a vehicle free walk with stunning views close to town.

Many thanks

Good afternoon,

I would like to submit the following views to the consultation.

  • if Marine Drive is to be closed to traffic and only accessed by pedestrians and cyclists then the roads and pavements should be resurfaced and maintained to provide a safe walking/cycling surface.

  • a car parking area should be identified and put in place so cars can safely be left.

  • increased dog excrement bins should be provided.

  • in places where cliff erosion has occurred these should be safely and securely barriered.

  • a viewing area with seating and telescope should be provided so the wildlife on sea and land can be enjoyed.

  • information boards on the birds, mammals and sealife in the area should be provided.

Yours faithfully

Having Marina Drive closed to cars either entirely or as much as possible is an absolutely great idea. It is a fab place to go running, cycling etc; cars are unwanted.

Furthermore, there is the practicality that having it fixed up for cars would be expensive for little return; connection from Douglas to the other places on this side of the isle is best served by other roads; the money is best spent elsewhere.

Marina Drive should be for leisure.

Best regards,
