Summary

A request was made for the number of confirmed diagnoses of myocarditis, pericarditis, and cardiac arrest on the Isle of Man between 2017 and 2021. Manx Care disclosed the total number of hospital admissions for these conditions combined but withheld a breakdown by specific condition to protect patient anonymity.

Key Facts

  • Data was provided as total hospital admissions rather than specific diagnoses due to small numbers risking patient identification.
  • A significant backlog of uncoded consultant episodes in 2020 likely resulted in lower reported numbers for that year.
  • The request was received on 16 March 2022 and the response was issued on 13 April 2022.
  • Manx Care clarified that they do not hold data on cardiac arrests occurring outside of hospitals.
  • The response included a list of ICD10 codes used to identify the relevant conditions.

Data Disclosed

  • 2017: 47 admissions
  • 2018: 47 admissions
  • 2019: 28 admissions
  • 2020: 2 admissions
  • 2021: 40 admissions
  • Total: 164 admissions
  • 2017-2021
  • 16 March 2022
  • 13 April 2022
  • Reference 2333246

Exemptions Cited

  • Patient anonymity and risk of identifying individual patients due to small numbers in categories

Our ref: 2333246 13 April 2022

Dear ###

We write further to your request which was received on 16th March 2022 which states:

""Please can you provide the number of confirmed incidences of the following on the Isle of Man: Myocarditis, Pericarditis, Cardiac arrest for the years 2017 – 2021”

We then sought clarification:
In relation to “incidents”, Manx Care do not hold this information, for example the number of cardiac arrest resulting in death without making it to the hospital, Public Health would hold this information for the whole Island. Are you seeking the number of hospital admissions for the above conditions or incidents? Your Response: “I am purely seeking the number of diagnosis” Our Response

Please note: 1. The numbers have not been broken down by condition [Myocarditis, Pericarditis, Cardiac Arrest] due to the small numbers in each category and sub-category that might therefore allow identification of individual patients and compromise patient anonymity 2. There is a considerable backlog of uncoded, finished consultant episodes from 2020 which could contribute to lower numbers being seen in these results during this period. Manx Care is actively working to develop a sustainable, accurate and timely clinical coding function to address this situation. Year No of Admissions 2017 47 2018 47 2019 28 2020 2 2021 40 TOTAL 164
