Dear ###
We write further to your request which was received on 18 October 2021 and which states:
"1. How many days road sweepers have been on the road over last 2 years. 2. How many miles covered daily. 3. If no road sweeper on the road - why not. 4. Are there any fulltime sweeper drivers."
Our response to your request is as follows: Most road sweeping is the responsibility of local authorities. The Department of Infrastructure sweep only the strategic links between the main towns and we can therefore only comment on this service. 1. The road sweepers are available 24/7 throughout the year, but are not always used to carry out sweeping duties every working day. Once the network has been swept, the operators are redeployed to alternative duties. We do not hold the information on their daily use. 2. The Department of Infrastructure has a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) of 20 miles per sweeper day. 3. There are reasons why a sweeper may not be on the road; these include, but are not limited to, the following: the network or sweeper route has been swept and there is no further requirement for sweeper duties, the vehicles are being serviced or repaired, and/or staff may be carrying out other duties. 4. There are no fulltime sweeper drivers. Staff are employed/deployed across a variety of roles as required.
