2 Overview

• In Summer 2020, Year 11 (16 year old) school leavers achieved a strong set of Level 1/2 results. There was a 7% increase on the number of students achieving the Level 2 threshold (5+ Level 2 including English and Maths) compared to the Summer 2019 Year 11 cohort.

• Destinations data is difficult to capture and is only a snapshot at any point in time however two early captures of indicative destinations have been key in tracking the Year 11 Summer 2020 cohort through this key transition period in their lives which was significantly disrupted by the Covid 19 global pandemic. From the opening of schools in June to the end of August 2020 the focus of additional work undertaken by the DESC Careers Team with schools and UCM has been to support applications for further education places. As a result of work around options available to them post compulsory school age fewer 16 year olds have opted to move straight into the workforce during Summer/early Autumn 2020.

• There were a greater number of education leavers engaging with the DESC Summer Signposts ‘drop in’ Careers Advice compared to the comparative period in 2019 (around double the numbers of contacts). These additional 30 contacts over the school summer holidays were significant in supporting these individuals in taking positive next steps. The DESC Careers Team and the Job Centre continue to work together to ensure effective support and good outcomes for young people.

• Careers Advisers have achieved significant success with individual young people
through specific targeted support (such as work around interview skills) and this has
helped these young people secure places on specific courses at UCM starting in September 2020.

• As of the start of the new academic year over 3% more students have stayed on in sixth form compared to 2019. Schools have indicated that they will be tracking these students closely to ensure appropriate matching of students to courses.

• Some post 16 students are still working towards achieving the 5+ Level 2 EM
threshold in either UCM or school sixth form.

• All Year 11 students attending the ESC (Education Support Centre) and all Year 11 LAC (looked after children) on school rolls had achieved a positive destination by the start of September 2020 (either employment, a place at UCM or school sixth form or an apprenticeship).

• A final capture of destinations data for the IOM Year 11 Summer 2020 cohort will be completed as is usual practice by the end of the Autumn Term 2020.

5 Overview

• A strong set of Level 3 results was achieved by Year 13 school leavers Summer 2020 (18 years old) with the number of top grades achieved up by 19.0% compared to 2019.

• 85% of Year 13 Students leaving Island schools in Summer 2020 achieved the 72+ UCAS points requirement for funding by DESC student awards for undergraduate courses. The reduction of UCAS points from 80+ to 72+ for the Summer 2020 cohort meant that 17 more students were eligible for this funding than if this change in threshold had not been agreed.

• Early indications are that the number of Year 13 students progressing on to higher education in Autumn 2020 is higher than in previous years and the number seeking employment is down significantly (a reduction of 8.3% compared to 2019).

• More students than in previous years have opted to stay in sixth form for an additional period (a full or part Year 14). This increase will be partially due to access to sixth form pathways that some schools offer and also some students opting to take exams in an additional Autumn Term series to improve on their grades.

• Destinations data is difficult to capture and is only a snapshot at any point in time however two early captures of indicative destinations data post Covid -19 school closures have been key in supporting this cohort of KS5 students with their next steps.

• It will be helpful to capture any change in the number of Year 14s with a final
December 2020 Year 13 destinations data capture.

• More Year 14 (19 year old) school leavers were accessing University places off Island than in any previous year indicating a strength to some individual’s results and there were significantly fewer who were looking to enter the workforce directly (10.2% fewer than in 2019).

• There is an indication that some Key Stage 5 school leavers have deferred their University places for a year and this may have been as a result of the significant changes in grading processes by Awarding Bodies over the results period or the ongoing impact of Covid 19.

To be considered further

• Cost of retakes in Autumn Series for Year 11 and Year 13 Leavers Summer 2020 – significant or not? following awarding of centre assessed grades by Exam Boards.
• Tracking of destinations over Year 11 and 13/14 Summer 2020 over the Autumn Term using usual processes to support sustained destinations. • Ongoing work between DESC, DfE and Social Security (Job Centre) to link up systems to support ongoing signposting of Summer 2020 School Leavers during Autumn.

From: To: Cc: Subject: Results Lite September 2020 Attachments: Results Lite for Schools.docx Importance: High Dear All Please find attached the outcomes of the results lite process that I have now completed. Please thank your staff for the information they have sent through to me in order to pull this together. I have included an overview of each section and have identified areas requiring further consideration during the Autumn. Could I please ask that you send me the numbers you have retaking exams in schools in the Autumn Series from Year 11 and Year 13 2020. Following the shift to CAG late on, the business case I had put in to cover these retake costs was knocked back. I am happy to re-submit a business case for retake costs for Year 11 and 13 Summer 2020 if this is significant to schools this Autumn (January in the case of BTEC exams). Subject: Results Lite for end of Key Stage 4 and 5 Leavers Summer 2020 Importance: High Dear All I hope you had a good first day with your students (new and old) yesterday. I’m just picking up on the results lite process that we started but paused last month due to the significant and ongoing changes around the awarding of grades to students in Year 11, 13 and 14 by exam boards. Capturing this now, alongside the September destinations data already requested, will support the development of an Island picture around the impact of exam awarding processes during Summer 2020 following the cancellation of exams due to Covid 19. I know at the start of term you will have done your own analysis in terms of % pass rates etc for your school so I have modified the template attached to use % rather than numbers as this should be easier. The cohort size for reporting following disapplication will also be important and the guidance for this for 2020 is attached as an appendix to the document. This is results lite and will not provide Island aggregate results by subject. If you think it would add any value to school improvement processes I could probably do something with this data later on this term so please just let me know if it would be useful to have Island % by subject to you as schools? Could you please let me have the figures for your school on the attached template by the end of next week (18th September)? If anything isn’t clear, then please let me know and I’ll get back to you individually.
