Job Summary
The main purpose of this role is to provide a high quality, patient centred NHS Dental service to priority groups as decided by the department. This includes but is not limited to vulnerable and special needs groups.
Our objective is to reduce inequalities in oral health and improve access to NHS dental services by providing an accessible, comprehensive range of primary dental services and preventative advice to priority patient groups.
We provide emergency treatment for patients who do not have access to GDS Services.
The post holder will take responsibility for the clinical management of patients within the dental team. Isle of Man Department of Health and Social Care Community Dental Service

Central Community Health Centre, Douglas. This post may require post holder to work in other community dental clinics on the island.

- To provide quality dental care, including :
A full range of primary care dental services to children and adults with special needs. To liaise and collaborate with staff in the service to facilitate service development. Planning and management of care for patients with medical co-morbidities or where other professionals/carers are involved, to resolve patient management issues. To supervise preventive programmes and care packages delivered by dental care professionals. To provide unscheduled care for patients who attend the service. Where required, provision of treatment under inhalation sedation, with further training. Where required, provision of treatment under GA in a hospital setting, with further training. Participation in development of oral health care services for children and adults with additional needs. Provision of domiciliary care for those who cannot attend the clinic. Referral to off-site community specialists and hospital services where appropriate.
- To be responsible for:
Appropriate dental care to a high standard for community patients.
Supervising and directing the supporting dental nurse, liaising as necessary with the
Senior Dental Nurse.
Relief of pain, control of sepsis and other necessary emergency treatment if needed.
Providing information to all patients of the cost of treatment.
To ensure that patient activity data is recorded on the dental software system.
To participate in the corporate functioning of the service, including performance
monitoring.
To take an active role in delivering the service required by the department of health and
social care.
- Communication:
To liaise with members of the dental profession and other professionals within the department, promoting dental and general health care of the local community. To maintain high standards of conduct in relation to patients and the general public.
- Training and development:
Mandatory training includes: intermediate life support, medical emergencies, fire training,
child and adult safeguarding, decontamination, IRMER.
To attend staff meetings and fully participate in audit and peer review.
Training requirements are identified in the annual Personal Development Reviews held
between the employee and line manager.
Clinicians will be entitled to 21 days within a three year period for the purpose of study
leave.
Regular practice of C.P.R. in the surgery and to participate in annual training sessions
including training in the use of defibrillators.
To participate in such continuing education or training as may be considered necessary for
personal development or organisational needs.
To participate in the development and training of other grades of staff, as required.

- Organisational responsibilities:
To work with a computerised record system. To take part in clinical governance activities and to comply with standards set, as part of the quality assurance programme. To take part in clinical audit, peer review and to have personal development plans within the Departments clinical governance framework. To provide information relating to service activity. To establish liaison with other healthcare and voluntary professions in order to promote the dental and general health of their patients.

To adhere to GDC Standards. To comply with safety instructions/policies laid down. To use in a proper and safe manner, the equipment and facilities provided. To refrain from the wilful misuse, or interference, with anything provided in the interests of health and safety and any action which might endanger yourself or others. To report, as soon as practical, all hazards and defects to your senior. To report, as soon as practical, all accidents and untoward occurrences and to ensure that accident and/or incident report forms are completed.
